Skateboarding’s Situated Sounds
Kirsty Smith
Project overview —

Skateboard media bears witness to insider visual vernacular. Implicit to its participants, coveted by fashion brands, these images and films function and morph into a series of media outputs, offering distinctive meaning. Referencing processes of editing and curation, my research and practise engages with visual ethnography, media anthropology and photographic autoethnography. From Los Angeles to Europe, I repositions the camera to function as a device from which to archive insider media specialists and participants, constructing analytical observations via site-specific practise, exploring site and sound.

Intertwined is an experimental project where, the senses of sight and sound exist as partial creative outputs, evolving from the result of skateboarding’s physical assemblage. The construction of these sounds are captured from the physical iterations which emanate from the success or failure to land a skateboarder’s ‘trick’. Each sound specifically changes to the repositioning of the body and the architectural surroundings, existing simultaneously within the physical construct of space and the surrounding momentary ether. The tacit nature of tension with each movement is interpreted and recaptured as a series of visual signatures, expanding our view of skateboarding’s form and function.
